PreK, Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders will all begin the new year by exploring the instruments of the orchestra by sight, sound, and touch. Students will spend the next few weeks exploring "real" instruments of a variety of families in the classroom, including the string, brass, and woodwind families. This, combined with a host of Internet resources and listening examples will allow students to get to know the instruments that pervade Western music.
Third graders, having already completed a research project before winter break, will start learning Anna Kendrick's "Cup Song." In addition to rehearsing and performing the song, they will learn the cup rhythm and game that accompanies it in order to provide their own percussion to the song and also to get the students kinesthetically involved in learning the complex rhythms of this popular tune.
