2nd Grade Instrument Inventions

Students in 2nd Grade acted as musicologists to learn about the characteristics of stringed instruments from around the world. After learning about stringed instruments both familiar and foreign, identifying their shared and unique sound-production traits, and even watching a video of a completely made-up stringed instrument, students designed and wrote about their own Invented Instruments that blend the real and imaginary in beautifully unique ways!

Class 3-320: "Fight Song" on Recorders

The entire Third Grade has been learning how to play recorders and read music for the last couple months, and this week class 3-320 worked on a new song. After working on it for a grand total of about 20 minutes combined over two weeks, they were able to perform it! It's not perfect yet, but it's extremely impressive how quickly they were able to get it to this point.

2nd Grade: Follow the Drinking Gourd

All 2nd Grade students learned and read about the song "Follow the Drinking Gourd," considered a traditional map song that helped Southern slaves find the Underground Railroad and escape to freedom. By following the "drinking gourd," or Big Dipper, slaves could head north, using the text of the song to guide the way.

Students loved the song so much they wanted to make a recording of it. In this recording, each class is featured in one verse and refrain, and all voices are heard in the final refrain of the song.

If you would like to receive a recording of this song, please email Mrs. Pearl and she will send you a link.

Class 1-216: We Shall Overcome

After Ms. Rorimer read the book We Shall Overcome: The Story of a Song to her students, they were absolutely hooked on the folk song it explored! Music class that week took on a life of its own when the students insisted we sing that song and make a recording to share with our families and friends. Enjoy!
